Living in Baihly Neighborhood

The Baihly neighborhood is an upper middle-class, hilltop and hillside neighborhood located southwest of Rochester, Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Mary’s Campus.  In general, the Baihly neighborhood is composed of multiple smaller housing divisions that include Baihly Heights (top of hill), Baihly Hills, Baihly Woodlands and Baihly Meadows(towards bottom of the hill).  All of the Baihly housing divisions are located next to each other, are well-established and consist of medium-sized to grand-sized showcase homes.  Geographically, this area is surrounded by other Rochester premier, desirable and historic neighborhoods like Foxcroft to the west/northwest and Folwell to the north/northeast. Then, to the south/southeast are essential commercial properties that are close enough to appreciate, but far enough away to keep the Baihly neighborhood safe and quiet.  Lastly, it should be noted that this area is closed off to major through streets, but is easily accessible to West Circle Drive/Salem Road on the southside.

The Baihly neighborhood divisions are classified as residential neighborhoods with primarily single family homes that were built in the 1980s and 1990s. Generally speaking, homes are 2,000-3,700 sq. ft in the Baihly Meadows and Baihly Hills area, but become more spacious in size (up to 6000 sq. ft.) in the Baihly Woodlands and Baihly Heights area.  Overall, homes tend to be 1 to 2 story, with or without walk-out basements, 4-6 bedrooms and 2-4 baths.  Additionally, luxury features are common and often include vaulted ceilings, walk-in closets, spa-like bathrooms, granite countertops, gourmet kitchens, custom woodwork, premier lighting, grand windows and hardwood floors throughout.  In the basement, family rooms are often equipped for entertaining with a home theater and/or game room capabilities. On the exterior, these homes tend to have a charming curb appeal with their brick, metal and/or vinyl siding, multi-peaked roofs and attached 2-4 car garages.  Additionally, lawns are well-kept, landscaping and trees are mature and the area is perfectly manicured.  Backyards are ready for entertaining with maintenance free decking, a patio, a fire pits and typically a grill.  Lastly, homes are situated on generous city lots on quiet cul-de-sacs and side-streets.

Within the Baihly neighborhood, there are 2 community parks:  Baihly Heights Tot Park and Baihly Meadows Park.  First, Baihly Heights Tot Lot is located on the top of the hill and is a smaller playground for toddlers and preschoolers.  Next, Baihly Meadows Park has a playground and an open green space for kids, families and friends to run and play. 

Nearby Parks:  Additionally, Younge Park is located just to the north/northwest Baihly Heights and has tennis courts, an expansive playground and an open playing field.

Best Restaurants, Bars and Things to Do Near Rochester, Minnesota’s Baihly Neighborhoods

Within the Baihly neighborhoods, you won’t find restaurants, bars and things to do other than walking on the endless sidewalks or going to the park.  However, to the south of the Baihly neighborhoods are various commercial businesses and access to the city’s popular bicycle/walking paths.  For shopping, T.J. Maxx (home decor retail store), Terraloco for new shoes and David’s Bridal for wedding apparel.  Next, the Apache Mall is across Hwy 52 and is made up of anchor stores like Scheels(Outdoors Store), JCPenney, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble.  For groceries, Natural Grocers, Hyvee Crossroads and Trader Joe’s are nearby.  Additionally, Kwik Trip (a favorite midwestern convenience store) is located at the base of the hill and offers a variety of quick grocery options. For a cup of coffee, try the drive-throughs at Dunn Brothers, Starbucks or Panera Bread.  For lunch, grab a gyro at Nupa South or a sandwich at Firehouse Subs.  Lastly, try Buffalo Wild Wings or  Hot Chip Burger Bar for a drink and to watch the big sports game with friends.  Another option for some adult fun is at Wildwoods Sports Bar & Grill and their outdoor beach volleyball courts.  

Next, to the northwest of Baihly Heights and past the Foxcroft neighborhood is the Rochester Country Club.  This 18-hole golf course is complete with premier amenities that include members only events, dining and swimming.

The Baihly neighborhoods’ children are assigned to Rochester Public School District’s Bamber Valley Elementary  (K-5th Grades with 840 students), Willow Creek Middle School (6th-8th Grades with 1,100 students) and Mayo High School (9th-12th Grades with 1,750 students).   

 

Fun Fact:  One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s historical homes, Bubilian House, is located in the Baihly neighborhood.  (However, it is privately owned and no tours are available at this time).
