The Elton Hills neighborhood is a densely populated, well-established neighborhood in north-central Rochester, Minnesota.  It is a family-friendly area that is conveniently situated near major roadways (Hwy 52/Hwy 63, Elton Hills Drive and West River Parkway) and is bikeable to the downtown Mayo Clinic headquarters and its hospitals (Saint Mary’s Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital).  Within its boundaries, Elton Hills has multiple community parks, blocks of well-maintained sidewalks, walking paths and both public and private schools.  Just outside of the Elton Hills neighborhood, are essential businesses that include restaurants, small businesses, clinics, salons and so forth.  This quiet and safe neighborhood is truly an ideal location just north of the heart of the city.

The Elton Hills neighborhood has a variety of real estate properties that were developed from the early 1960’s to the early 2000’s.  For single family homes, there are ranch style homes with detached garages, raised ranches and split-levels with and without tuck-under garages and traditional 2-story homes.  Homes range from 1200-2500 sq ft, have 3-4 bedrooms, 2+ bathrooms and 1-2 car garages.  On the exterior, homes have vinyl, metal, wood and brick finishes.  Lawns often have fences between neighbors, have mature trees and are roomy enough for a backyard entertaining area.  

 

In addition to single family homes, the neighborhood has a small variety of townhomes, condos and apartments.  On the southeastern side of the neighborhood, there are townhomes, condos and apartments that were developed in the 1970s.  On the northeastern side, there are townhomes that were developed in the early 2000s.

The Elton Hills neighborhood has 3 community parks:  Riverview West Park, Elton Hills Park and Elton Hills Run Park. Riverview West Park  is located on the far northwestern portion of the neighborhood and has an open play area near a creek and bike trail.  Elton Hills Park is located on the southern side of the neighborhood and has a basketball court, open playing field and a playground. Elton Hills Run Park is located on the central and northeastern part of the neighborhood and has a play park and a paved running and biking trail.  (See Rochester Parks & Trail System Map. Map #3 is the Elton Hills area).  In addition to the community parks, neighborhood residents also have access to playgrounds, basketball courts and open play areas found at the neighborhood schools (Elton Hills Elementary and Rochester Central Lutheran Schools’s Lutheran School Park).

Crescent Park Playground – (Northwest).  Has an open playing field with a playground.

Viking Park – (Southeast; at Hoover Elementary School). Has baseball/softball diamonds, hockey rink (outdoors) and playground.

Elton Hills is primarily a residential neighborhood that does have a few businesses.  These businesses include 2 schools, numerous home-based businesses, a couple of churches (River of Glory Church and Holy Cross Lutheran Church) and the Appliance Village

 

Local Tip:  Appliance Village has been in the neighborhood for decades and provides its customers with not only new appliance sales, but also appliance servicing and repairs at your home.

There are no restaurants, bars or commercial entertainment within the neighborhood; however, just outside of Elton Hills there are numerous businesses that outline the neighborhood boundaries and/or are accessible within minutes of exiting the area.

To the north of Elton Hills, Hyvee – North is a favored grocery store with dining and it has a gas station.  To the east, entertainment can be found at Bowlocity.  Bowlocity offers alcoholic beverages, a variety of foods, bowling, laser-tag and arcade games for all ages.  For hockey, ice skating, swimming and fitness, the Rochester Recreation Center and 125 Live are on the eastern edge.  Additionally, to the east of the neighborhood, Dunn Brothers Coffee , Olmsted Medical Center’s Fast Care and Rennings Florists and Flowers are located.  To the west of Elton Hills is a Holiday Gas Station and the Rochester Athletic Club (RAC).  

 

Local Tip:  The Rochester Athletic Club (RAC) is worth the cost of the membership for the amount of amenities you receive.  This facility has fitness classes, weight-rooms, walking/running tracks, coaches, salt-water pools (indoor), waterpark (outdoor), tennis courts, pickleball, mini golf and an expansive children’s entertainment area.

Elton Hills children are assigned to Rochester Public School District’s based on where they reside in the neighborhood. In general, children from western side of Elton Hills are assigned to Elton Hills Elementary (K-5th Grades with 480 students; located within the neighborhood), John Adams Middle School (6th-8th Grades with 1,100 students) and John Marshall High School (9th-12th Grades with 1,550 students). Then, children that reside on the eastern side of the neighborhood are assigned to Churchill – Hoover Elementary (K-5th Grades with 650 students),  Kellogg Middle School (6th-8th Grades with 1,040 students) and Century High School (9th-12th Grades with 1,550 students).

 

Rochester Public Schools also has many options for open enrollment to other elementary sites. Alternatively, numerous private schools, catholic, lutheran and STEM exist within the city limits.  In fact, Rochester Central Lutheran Schools (RCLS)is located within the Elton Hills neighborhood and enrolls 400 students in pre-k through 8th grade.  

 

Local Tip:  Churchill – Hoover Elementary is actually 2 different building sites.  The Churchill building enrolls K-2nd grade students. It is located 2.5 miles northeast of Elton Hills, on top of a large hill and is a short drive from the neighborhood.  The Hoover building enrolls 3rd-5th grade students and is located within steps of the neighborhood’s southeast side.  Together, these 2 buildings enroll a total of 650 students.
