Living in Slatterly Park

The Slatterly Park neighborhood is a densely populated residential and business area that is located southeast of the downtown district of Rochester, Minnesota.  Neighborhood boundaries include 4th Street on the north, 15th Avenue on the east, highway 14 to the south and Broadway Avenue on the west.  To add to the neighborhood beauty, Rochester’s Bear Creek travels north to south directly through the eastern portion of the neighborhood.  Then, surrounding the creek is the beloved Slatterly Park and its endless paved bicycle and running trails.  Lastly, commercial properties are scattered throughout the area and are inclusive of schools, convenience stores, churches, numerous restaurants and even a university.

The Slatterly Park neighborhood is considered affordable and consists of cozy, bungalow style homes that were built in the early 1900s through the 1950s.  In general, the single family residences are modest in size (800-2,500 sq. ft.), 2-4 bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms, and have an unfinished or partially finished basement.  Additionally, on the inside, homes have a cozy feel with a dine-in, breakfast nook or galley style kitchens, hardwood floors and wooden built-ins.  On the exterior, homes often have a 0-2 car detached garage, landscaping is simple, trees are mature, yards are usually fenced and nestled next to one-another.    

Next, many of these single family homes are owner-occupied; however, a number of the properties have been converted to duplexes, triplexes and quad-plexes as investment/rental properties.  These rental properties are important assets to Mayo Clinic and Rochester’s workforce and patient population.   

Overall, this neighborhood attracts those individuals interested in an affordable home, a starter house or as an investment opportunity. Currently (2022), homes in the Slatterly Park neighborhood range from $150,000-225,000 and are appropriately appreciating with market value.  

 

Mayo Clinic Employee Tip:  The Mayo Clinic East Parking Lot is on the northwestern corner of the Slatterly Park neighborhood.  This employee parking lot requires prior authorization to park a vehicle there; however, any Mayo Clinic employee can ride the shuttle bus to your Mayo Clinic building destination.  Simply walk from your neighborhood house to the parking lot and eliminate the worry of finding a parking spot downtown or by Saint Mary’s Hospital.

The Slatterly Park neighborhood has one community park known as Slatterly Park.  This park is located along the Bear Creek and consists of baseball and softball diamonds, sand volleyball, disc golf, garden plots and horseshoes.  Additionally, the park has a picnic shelter, rentable space, playground and access to paved biking and walking/running trails that take you all over the city.

As previously stated, businesses are plentiful and scattered throughout the Slatterly Park neighborhood. First, for dining options that include breakfast, enjoy Brothers Bar & Grill, Fiddlehead Coffee or Caribou Coffee.  Then, for lunch, try Zadeos Pizza, KFC, Corona’s Tacos, Snappy Stop, Dominos, Taco Jed  or  Francis Tacos. Lastly, for a night out, check out the Rochester Eagles Club and see what food and fun event(s) they have going on.

Next, for retail, there are multiple essential businesses.  First, there are three convenience stores found within the neighborhood: Kwik Trip (south), Holiday Station Stores (north) and Holiday Gas Station (southeast).  Next, Cub Foods is located on the southeast end and has all of your grocery needs.  Lastly, Beds Galore Leather and More is located on the southwest side and is full of furniture for your new home. 

Now, for medical care, the Slatterly Park neighborhood is lucky to call the Olmsted Medical Center – Southeast Clinichome.  This family/primary care clinic is located on the western portion of the neighborhood and is a full functioning medical clinic (i.e. lab, pharmacy, social services, pediatrics, primary care, etc.).  

Next, if you are interested in the arts, be sure to check out Rochester Pops Orchestra (music) and Immersion Youth Repertory (theater).  Both of these organizations are open to the public and are centrally located within the neighborhood.  

Lastly, neighborhood churches include Redeemer Lutheran Church and Bethel Lutheran Church and they are both centrally located.  On top of offering spiritual services, Bethel Lutheran Church also houses Augsburg University – Rochester Campus.  This university has assisted numerous local nurses in advancing their nursing degrees to a bachelors, masters or doctoral level.  

 

Best Restaurants, Bars and Things to Do Near Rochester, Minnesota’s Slatterly Park Neighborhood

Just outside of the neighborhood is an even larger variety of restaurants, bars and things to do.  One of the best places to dine is the Bleu Duck Kitchen.  This restaurant has a delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner with custom cocktails and live acoustic music.  Next, Pasquales Neighborhood Pizzeria to the northwest is a local Italian favorite that is known for its pizza and authentic dishes.  For nighttime entertainment, walk north and you will quickly be in the downtown district and its bar scene.  

Activities just outside of the neighborhood include parks like Bear Creek Park (southeast) and McQuillan Parks (southeast).  These parks have baseball and softball fields (with community organized leagues), playgrounds and are accessible to the community bike trails that go through the Slatterly Park neighborhood.  On rainy days, take the kids to Air Insanity (east) and have them jump their energy off on the trampolines.  Then, on a sunny day, meet up with some friends for a round of golf at Soldiers Field Golf Course (west) affordable golf course.  

 

Best Schools in Rochester, Minnesota’s Slatterly Park Neighborhood

Slatterly Park children are assigned to Rochester Public School District’s Riverside Central Elementary (K-5th Grades with 500 students) or Lincoln K-8 District Wide School.  For middle school, students either continue with Lincoln K-8 or transfer to Willow Creek Middle School (6th-8th Grades with 1,100 students).  Mayo High School (9th-12th Grades with 1,750 students) is the assigned high school.

Additional schooling opportunities within the neighborhood include a private preschool called EPIC Endeavors Academy.  This preschool emphasizes the STEM learning model.  For adults, the Hawthorne Center provides opportunities for adult education through the Rochester Community Education Department.
